Living an Adventurous Life

Living an Adventurous Life

Modern life is a combination of systems, structures, rules and regulations designed to keep everything ordered, under control and manageable. Combine this with our reliance on routine and focus on comfort is it any wonder that we find ourselves staring out the office window (if you are lucky enough to have one!) longing for something we can’t quite put our finger on. The secret to satisfying that feeling deep inside you that calls for something more is as simple as putting a little adventure in your life. Here are 5 (no so) secrets to getting just that – more adventure in you day-to-day, breaking routines, releasing the need to always be in control and embracing uncertainty.

“One way to make the most of life is to look upon it as an adventure”

Secret number 1 – Know what adventure is to you then make a list.

Adventure is different things to different people. To some it is risky extreme expeditions into the unknown while to others it is as simple as walking to a new coffee shop on a Saturday morning rather than driving to the regular spot. Adventure is defined as “Engaging in an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.” Okay – so typically hazardous does conjure up visions of base-jumping and surfing giant waves. But if that is not your thing then focus on the key words of unusual and exciting. The best thing is you get to set your own definition of adventure and better still you get to reset that definition as you grow. So take a minute or two to come up with what adventure is for you then make a list of adventurous things to do.

“Adventure isn’t hanging off a rope on the side of a mountain. Adventure is an attitude we must apply to the day to day obstacles of life”

Secret number 2 – Be an explorer.

When we were kids we were all explorers. We would always be looking around, asking questions, trying things out, testing boundaries – living with an open mind. To get more adventure in your life re-open your mind and start exploring again. Being an explorer is seeing the world from a different perspective. It’s choosing to see beauty in the ordinary and finding ways to do the every day differently. It is exploring where you are and choosing to look at it differently. It’s about going on a road trip not for the destination, but for the journey. Adventure is everywhere – it is in the smallest of moments to grandest decisions – it can be found in our everyday lives – in the little things – if only you choose to see it. So start acting like an explorer and discover adventure.

“We were meant to explore this earth like children do, unhindered by fear, propelled by curiosity and a sense of discovery. Allow yourself to see the world through new eyes and know there are amazing adventures here for you.”

Secret number 3 – Keep it simple

You don’t need fancy high tech gear, loads of cash or travel to an exotic destination to have an adventure. Adventure does not have to be complicated. Sure it can be – but it does not need to be. This is the beauty of being adventurous – you can do it in any situation and you have everything you need at your fingertips. Adventure is about seizing opportunities and taking on life with nothing but passion, enthusiasm and excitement – that isn’t that complicated when you think about it. Keeping it simple means every day can be an adventure. Whether you are trekking through the mountains, growing a business, walking the dog or chasing your kids in the back yard, choose to treat every day with a sense of marvel and excitement. A key ingredient of an adventurous life is a dash of simplicity.

‘’The only question in life is whether or not you are going to answer a hearty ‘YES!’ to your adventure.’’

Secret number 4 – Don’t be afraid of being uncomfortable

To get more adventure in your life I am sorry but you are going to have to get more comfortable with uncomfortable. Yes – that’s right – you are going to have to be uncomfortable. But it is OK – because this is actually something you need in your life. All our greatest achievements at some point had a moment of discomfort. We spend so much time trying to make our lives comfortable that we forget the value of the opposite. Accepting uncomfortable opens you to the chance to experience new things and test limits you never knew existed. Being uncomfortable is an adventure in itself and shows you a new way of looking at your world.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

Secret number 5 – Just do it!

Okay – yes – I stole this from Nike – but there really is no better way to put it. To live an adventurous life you need to action. To get more adventure in your life go and do something – anything. Plan something, create a goal, book a trip, build a map, take a trip, join a group, buy that book or enter an event. Taking action is the surest way to create momentum and start your path to a life with more adventure. While some say that adventure is out of their reach, the truth is that you’re only ever either taking action to achieve a specific goal, or making excuses for why you aren’t. As soon as you make that first decision you are creating an adventurous life and ironically that first decision is in itself being adventurous. So what can you do right now, this afternoon or tonight, to increase your adventure quotient?
